Recast Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD)

The Energy & Emissions Readiness Checklist for wastewater treatment plants

Energy audits, energy neutrality and greenhouse gas emissions are becoming part of everyday plant operation under the recast UWWTD. This one-page checklist shows where your plant stands and what to put in place now.

Cover of the one-page Energy & Emissions Readiness Checklist: new rules for energy and emissions, four check areas and key dates from now to 2045

What the recast UWWTD means for your plant

Energy audits

Regular energy audits of treatment plants and collecting systems, every four years, for plants from 10,000 p.e.

Energy neutrality

A national energy neutrality target for the wastewater sector by 2045, with milestones from 2030.

Greenhouse gas emissions

N₂O and CH₄ move into focus. Energy measures should not increase them, and EU rules on how emissions are measured and reported are being drafted now.

Nitrogen removal

Stricter nitrogen and phosphorus removal, starting with plants from 150,000 p.e.

  1. Now

EU implementing rules are being drafted, including how emissions are measured and reported

  2. 31 Jul 2027

    National transposition deadline

  3. 2028

First energy audits for plants from 100,000 p.e.

  4. 2030

    First national energy neutrality milestone

  5. 2032

First energy audits for plants from 10,000 p.e.

  6. 2039

Nitrogen and phosphorus removal for plants from 150,000 p.e.

  7. 2045

Energy neutrality for the wastewater sector

12 checks in four areas

Know your obligations

Plant size thresholds, national implementation (KARL in Germany, N₂O rules in Denmark) and planned construction such as a fourth treatment stage.

Measure your greenhouse gases

Measured N₂O and CH₄ instead of emission factors, continuous measurement and data that holds up in an audit.

Prepare your energy audit

Aeration energy against biological demand, documented data and reducing demand, not only producing energy.

Keep your biological treatment stage stable

N₂O as a process signal, early detection of process changes and verifying plant modifications.

Measured, not estimated

N₂O and CH₄ emissions vary between plants and over time, so emission factors can't show when or why they occur. EmiCo lite measures the off-gas above the biological treatment stage and gives you an integral, fast-reacting signal from the aeration tank. Conventional process sensors describe conditions at their measuring point; off-gas measurement complements them rather than replacing them.

  1. 1Measure

    EmiCo lite

Measures N₂O, CH₄, oxygen consumption and CO₂ generation in the off-gas.

  2. 2Analyze

    EmiCo Insight

Turns the data into evaluations, process visualizations, recommendations and reports.

  3. 3Optimize

    Insight Air

    Supports aeration optimization.
